(08.20.12) Pens, Paper and… UNDERWEAR? Salvation Army gives out undergarments for Back-to-School

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Back to School Program began on Monday, July 23.

The Salvation Army gives out new underwear and new socks to children in grades K-12 until supplies run out and the goal is to serve 1,000 school aged children with a weeks worth of undergarments.

From July 23 – 26, 2012, we assisted over 800 students with approximately 12,075 individual undergarments for Back to School.

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command has chosen to assist these children by providing undergarments as they return to school for the coming year. Each year has seen an increase in program needs.

The volume of children assisted each year, are as follows; 2009 – 373 children, 2010 – 412 children and 2011 – 607 children. W

“We are expecting this upward trend to continue as the general needs of our community have continued to increase over the past year,” said Salvation Army Social Services Director Ashley Jones. “Estimates for individuals applying this year are between 800 and 1,000 individuals.”
