OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma is pleased to welcome its new Area Commanders, Majors Dan and Mary Matthews. They assumed their position on June 26 and have quickly settled into their new surroundings and are looking forward to getting to know the community and continuing the work of The Salvation Army.
Salvation Army Officers are periodically transferred to different locations, typically every 3-4 years. Majors Dan and Mary are enthusiastic and dynamic leaders and come to Oklahoma City from Fayetteville, Arkansas, where for the last two years they were responsible for the programs and services of the The Salvation Army of Northwest Arkansas Area Command.
Prior to their appointment in Fayetteville, they served as Salvation Army Administrators for the Birmingham, AL Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC), and as Corps Officers in Charlottesville, VA; Lake Worth, FL; & Vero Beach, FL. In 2000, they graduated from The Salvation Army’s School for Officer’s Training. Prior to leadership in The Salvation Army, they served as missionaries in Novgorod, Russia. While missionaries, they had the opportunity to work with medical teams and other social services projects to meet practical needs of individuals. Those outreaches provided an avenue to show and share God’s love with the people. It was this exposure to human hurt and need that drew them to the mission of The Salvation Army. After returning home from the mission field, they were introduced to The Salvation Army and chose to join their ministry and mission.
“It has been exciting to meet the people of Oklahoma City and discover the opportunities for ministry here,” said Major Dan Matthews. “We look forward to meeting the needs of the community and ‘Doing The Most Good’ alongside the staff, volunteers and supporters of The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command.”
The couple is responsible for all programs and services at The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma, as well as oversight of The Salvation Army Canadian County Service Unit and The Salvation Army of Cleveland County.
