How to Get Involved

It is our pleasure to serve our community and we would love for you to join us. We offer many ways for you to get involved as we work year-round to serve those in need in Oklahoma, Cleveland and Canadian Counties.

Below are various volunteer opportunities. To volunteer, contact our Volunteer Coordinator Liz Banks at 405-246-1107 or liz.banks@uss.salvationarmy.org.

If there is a need to cancel your volunteer group, please notify us at least 48 hours in advance.

2016 CHRISTMAS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Ring the Bell

  • November 18 – December 24
  • Gather a group of family or friends and adopt a red kettle for a few hours! Entertain shoppers by singing or just welcome them with a festive greeting as they enter and exit area businesses.

The Red Kettle campaign is The Salvation Army’s largest fundraiser of the year. Funds raised from the kettles assists families in need year round with shelter, food, healing and hope. Sign up today and help us meet the needs of families in Central Oklahoma.

Angel Tree Workshop 

  • December 5 – 17
  • Ever wondered what it’s like to be one of Santa’s elves? Wonder no more when you volunteer at The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Workshop! Come help us check in gifts for our Angels and organize everything for our families. Make Christmas brighter for our senior Angels by wrapping their gifts so they’ll have a surprise on Christmas morning.

Angel Tree Distribution

  • December 19 – 23
  • You can make Christmas even brighter for our families by assisting them as they collect their Angels’ gifts. Sign up today to come help our Angel Tree families as they pick up their gifts, Bible and food basket for Christmas morning.

Buck$ 4 Bikes Assembly Day

Join us as we assemble over 1,400 bicycles for children on The Salvation Army Angel Tree. If assembling the bikes isn’t your thing, there are other opportunities to help like: breaking down cardboard boxes, keeping the work area clear of debris, pushing completed bikes from the assembly area to the final inspection area and more.

If you plan on assembling bikes, be sure to bring your own set of assorted tools which should include the following:

  • Set of metric sockets
  • Set of metric allen wrenches (13, 14 & 15mm)
  • Set of metric wrenches
  • Flat blade and phillips screw drivers
  • Crescent wrench
  • Box knife or diagonal cutters
  • Pliers
  • Flathead screwdrivers
  • Bike Stand (optional)

ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Red Shield Diner1001 N. Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City, OK 73107

  • Provide, Prepare, Serve.
    • Organize a group of family, friends or coworkers to purchase food for our Red Shield Diner, prepare the meal in our kitchen, and serve our guests as they join us for dinner.
    • Example Dinner: Spaghetti, green beans, salad and chocolate chip cookies
  • Days & Hours
    • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday – 4 to 7 p.m.
    • Wednesday & Sunday – 3 to 6 p.m.

Client Choice Food Pantry1001 N. Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City, OK 73107

  • Assist client with shopping
  • Offer encouraging words or prayer
  • Days & Hours
    • Monday: 1 to 4 p.m.
    • Tuesday (Stocking Food Pantry): 9 a.m. to Noon
    • Wednesday: 9 a.m. to Noon; 1 to 4 p.m.
    • Thursday (Stocking Food Pantry):  9 a.m. to Noon; 1 to 4 p.m.
    • Friday: 9 a.m. to Noon
  • This would be a great opportunity for a church, corporate, sports group or family, as a group of 10-12 individuals are needed every Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
  • Children must be at least 10 years old and accompanied by an adult to volunteer in our food pantry.

Hope Gardens – 1001 N. Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City, OK 73107

  • Adopt one of our twenty 3 ft. by 8 ft. raised garden beds for a season (Spring/Summer/Fall) with your family, coworkers or church group.
  • Maintain bed by weeding and watering plants weekly
  • Donate produce to The Salvation Army for use in Client Choice Food Pantry or Red Shield Kitchen
  • Days & Hours:
    • You may tend to your garden bed as often as needed at your convenience.

Family Shelter – 1001 N. Pennsylvania, Oklahoma City, OK 73107

  • Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Teach educational classes
    • Lead craft time
    • Help with seasonal parties
  • Days & Hours:
    • Monday, Friday & Saturday – 5 p.m.
  • A background check is required before volunteering

Senior Centers – 5 Locations (Click for locations)

  • Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Need: Dance Instructors & Exercise Health Professionals
    • Serve lunch and assist with cleanup
    • Teach educational classes
    • Lead craft time
    • Help with seasonal parties
    • Entertain the seniors with a musical/theatrical performance
    • Lead Bible studies
  • Days & Hours:
    • Monday through Friday – 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • A background check is required before volunteering

Boys & Girls Club 2808 S.E. 44th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73129

  • Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Coach a sports team
    • Become an after school tutor
    • Teach life skills classes
    • Help prepare & serve snacks
    • Provide seasonal/birthday parties
    • Entertain the kids with a musical/theatrical performance
  • Days & Hours:
    • Monday through Friday
      • School Season – 3 to 6:30 p.m.
      • Summer Season – 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • A background check is required before volunteering

Disaster Relief

  • Attend training to become a certified disaster volunteer so you can be on the front lines when a disaster strikes.
  • Visit disaster.salvationarmyusa.org to see our upcoming course & enroll. You must create a profile for our database.
  • Must be 18 years old or older to become a disaster volunteer.
